Reader's Reviews:

"This is one of the most moving books I have read. The story of emotional survival. The historic values described in detail makes this book academic in my opinion and should be required reading in schools. The laces of father and daughter writings makes for a very emotional reading. I see Bernard’s escape as a miracle that  Anne Frank didn’t get to have, both stories were told but it was the first time I read the survivor’s guilt felt by the ones who escape the brutality of the holocaust. Great literature has come out of the Holocaust and this book is as good as Night, Rena’s Promise, Hidden in Berlin and many others. This book should be made into a movie! It’s educational, it’s inspiring, it’s a guide to emotionally surviving and triumph.” Bianca

“I found the story riveting, specifically the Lithuanian part, but also his experiences in America and the Army. Living in the South for him was very informative and illuminating. The fact that he was never in a big immigrant community like New York or Chicago highlighted his sense of aloneness. The role of synchronicity played such a strong role in times of crisis and conflict. The writing was so “readable”’ and it contributed to an understanding of the many issues he faced.” Barbara

“Hearing (reading) the events of the Holocaust as told by Bernard made me even more aware of how horrible a time in history that was. He (you as author) made it so much more vivid, and in some ways more unreal, than I had ever thought. I cried throughout the entire book. In your prayers, thank your father for telling his story, and thank you for completing it for history to record and remember.” H. Glatstein

“This is one of the most important, meaningful and inspiring books I have read. It is written with facts and feelings perfectly entwined. I could not put it down until the last page.” Joyce K.

Review by Belgian translator of original testimonies given by Lithuanians after 1945:
“I really loved your book!
I am amazed that your father managed to write his own story and in such a detailed and profound manner after all he went through. Most survivors close themselves in silence. They don't manage to articulate their feelings into words or find the words are inadequate. He was a very brave man and you were lucky to have him as a father. I am also glad you decided to write about the rest of his life because it's important to know how a person can cope with such a past. Thank you so much, Nancy for sharing your father's story!” Geraldine T.

“I just finished the book, 50 Cents for a Life. It was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Nancy is a great writer and took me on such a journey. I don't think I ever had so many tears when reading a book!”  Michelle L.

“I usually do not write book reviews, but I think this book should be read by all. Mr. Rosenfeld gave his daughters, wife, and himself a gift by writing about his family, escaping Lithuania before the Holocaust and his journey to the USA and the sadness that often came over him. Nancy Rosenfeld gives a historical background to help one understand the horrible circumstances of the times. The feelings Mr. Rosenfeld had throughout his life, can be experienced by many, and being afraid to tell a loved one is common, especially for men. I read this in 2 days. That is unusual for me. It is a beautiful tribute, not just by a daughter to her father, but to society and helping others understand loved ones, friends, and acquaintances who have experienced tragedy.” M. Lincove

“I am enthralled with this book! It’s so beautiful, and heartbreaking too. What a history this family has.” Patricia S.

“I just finished your book.  At times, tears flowed down my face.  I can’t imagine the pain….and the joy….you must have felt while writing about your father and his story of survival. I know so little about my relatives’ experiences.  I am grateful for your father’s stories as I wonder what happened to my people. Many of us know about the Holocaust, but your personalization of his life makes it so much more tangible to those of us who did not have relatives or know of those that perished. Thank you, Nancy, for sharing such a passionate story.  Your love for your father shines in every page. He gave you many blessings, especially in your artistic endeavors...both with pen and paint brush.”  L. Minkow

“Reading this really made me feel like I had a glimpse into a part of history that is both unbelievable and sickening. The way he was protected and wrapped in a special invisible safety net allowing him to live a full life while everything he knew was destroyed is incredible. I rarely get emotionally involved in a story the way this one sucked me in.” S. Alexander

"I read this story and actually couldn't put it down until I finished the entire book. The early chapters about how a very young Bernard Rosenfeld left his family and friends to escape what turned out to be the death of so many brought me to tears. The background about how his daughters found out about their father is inspiring. It is especially interesting because Nancy Rosenfeld was not only able to tell her father's story, but she researched and included very interesting and important general facts about WWII." R. Kranson

“This book touched me in many ways. I was awestruck. There are several stories in the book….escape from probable death for Bernard; an immigrant’s assimilation into the United States, finding one’s passion, recognizing and working through survivor’s guilt, and deep spiritual connections. The book is well worth reading!”    M.Baker

“I was moved by how it all started for him. I was moved by his strength, determination, survival instinct, intelligence, his talent, his dedication to work, temple, and family - especially now that I see his lasting legacy, and how his life turned out in the end. I was also moved by his pursuit to find the truth, and others from his village - I was moved by the reunion - that took so long to occur. I would love to see his Judaic art, or even own a piece. It would be such an honor!”  M. Wells

“Amazing story of resilience. Great history lesson about WWII from a personal perspective. Such a deep connection between a father and daughter.” S.E.

“I just finished 50 Cents for a Life. What you and your Dad created is very impactful. The atrocities of World War II, the destruction and the millions of people killed are mind-numbing and the way you broke out the stories made it even more haunting. Your Dad's journey to the U.S. was amazing as was the synchronicity of it. His early years in the U.S. and what he went through including his military service and dealings with officers. I also appreciated your references throughout to Jewish culture. “ H. Chamberlain

"Didn't intend to read immediately but couldn't put it down. So VERY well arranged! GREAT praise for the wonderful story our whole world needs!!!" Barb E.

“This is a fabulous historical memoir that combines WWII history and the many difficult obstacles a refugee/immigrant from Lithuania overcame as he made his way to the United States. I found it fascinating that Bernard’s struggles seem similar to what some people are facing now.”   M. Pierce

“I couldn't put this book down. It's an amazing story about a very resilient man who made the most of his life despite the horrific loss of his family members. I love how his daughter is keeping him and the story of his miraculous life alive today. These kinds of stories need to be told and kept alive, especially in light of current world events. Very well written and compelling!” S.R.
